Wizz Air Expands In Katowice

Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe announced today that it will base a sixth Airbus A320 aircraft at its Katowice base. From March 2017 the airline will operate four new services to such attractive holiday destinations as Catania on the island of Sicily, the capital of Portugal, Lisbon, Reykjavik in Iceland and Malta. With the new routes, Wizz Air will have over 2,2 million seats on sale on Katowice routes in 2017, representing a 19% growth year over year.

Since its first flight in 2004, Wizz Air has constantly expanded its Katowice network, which now consists of 36 low-fare routes to 17 countries. In 2015, Wizz Air carried more than 1,5 million passengers on its Katowice routes supporting over 1000 local jobs*.

The new aircraft represents an investment of $98 million** by WIZZ in Katowice, creating 36 additional direct jobs with the airline. Wizz Air’s new employees will join 200 dedicated local crew, who deliver excellent onboard service on each WIZZ flight.

With its new Katowice services, Wizz Air now offers a total of 136 low-fare routes to 24 countries from eight Polish airports. All flights are already on sale and can be booked on wizzair.com from PLN 129***.

Speaking at a press conference in Katowice today, George Michalopoulos, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air,said: “We are excited to announce the basing of a sixth aircraft in Katowice, the airport which saw Wizz Air’s very first flight back in 2004. The sixth aircraft allows us to launch new routes to Lisbon, Malta, Reykjavik and Catania which nicely complement our offering of leisure routes from Katowice. Let’s also not forget that we recently announced new routes from Katowice to Dubai, Tenerife and Lanzarote which will start from the end of next month. This further deployment once more proves our commitment to Katowice and Poland as a whole, where we now serve a total of 136 routes to 58 destinations.”
