Air New Zealand Takes Delivery of First Higher-Weight Boeing 787-9, Delays Skynest Launch

Air New Zealand has taken delivery of its first new Boeing 787-9 in seven years, becoming the first airline to receive a certified 787 Dreamliner featuring increased maximum takeoff weight (iMTOW) capability.

The aircraft, registered ZK-NZT, is scheduled to arrive in Auckland ahead of the Southern Hemisphere summer travel season. A second new 787-9, registered ZK-NZS, is expected to follow within days.

The higher-weight configuration provides additional payload flexibility for passengers, baggage and cargo on long-haul routes, particularly the airline’s Auckland–New York service. Air New Zealand was the launch customer for the original 787-9 in 2014.

The new aircraft features a 219-seat configuration, including eight Business Premier Luxe seats, 34 Business Premier seats, 52 Premium Economy seats and 125 Economy seats. The Economy cabin includes nine Skycouch and 24 Economy Stretch seats.

Air New Zealand has also completed cabin retrofits on 13 of its 14 existing 787-9 aircraft, with the final aircraft expected to return to service before the end of 2026. The airline plans to introduce updated Business Premier and Economy cabins across its Boeing 777 fleet during 2027.

Separately, the airline has postponed the introduction of its Economy Skynest sleeping accommodation, originally scheduled for December 2026, because regulatory certification is taking longer than expected.

Rather than delay the new aircraft’s entry into service, Air New Zealand will install Skynest after the peak summer season. The airline is working with Boeing on the remaining certification requirements and has not announced a revised launch date.
