Rolls-Royce and UK Government Plan £2.5 Billion Jet Engine Technology Programme

Rolls-Royce and the UK Government have announced plans for a 10-year, £2.5 billion research and technology programme aimed at developing next-generation gas turbine technologies for commercial and military aircraft, including a potential return by Rolls-Royce to the narrowbody aircraft engine market.

The proposed programme would focus on more efficient, lower-emission engine technologies and include an engine demonstrator project. It would also support the UK’s military engine development and testing capabilities while expanding advanced aerospace manufacturing capacity.

Rolls-Royce is targeting an engine position on the next generation of single-aisle commercial aircraft, which are expected to enter service in the mid-to-late 2030s. Aircraft manufacturers are anticipated to select engine partners over the next several years, ahead of potential aircraft programme launches around 2030.

If selected by an aircraft manufacturer, Rolls-Royce intends to re-enter the narrowbody engine market through a partnership. The company would establish new UK facilities for engine assembly and testing while expanding production capacity for advanced components, including high-pressure turbine blades and composite fan blades.

The initial stages of the programme, subject to a final agreement, are expected to support approximately 3,300 jobs at Rolls-Royce and its UK supply chain by the end of 2029. The company and government estimate that securing a position on future narrowbody aircraft programmes could generate up to £120 billion in economic activity over the programme’s lifetime and support tens of thousands of additional jobs.

Rolls-Royce expects its investment in the narrowbody initiative to significantly exceed the government’s contribution. The programme would also involve UK universities and aerospace suppliers in research, technology development and manufacturing expansion.

The proposed investment remains subject to a definitive agreement, and no aircraft manufacturer or engine development partnership has been announced.
