Somon Air Takes Delivery of Tajikistan's First Boeing 737 MAX

Somon Air has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737-8, becoming the first airline in Tajikistan to operate the 737 MAX as it advances its fleet modernization strategy and expands its international network.

The aircraft is the first of two Boeing 737-8s being leased from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE). It will support short- and medium-haul operations across Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, while providing the range and operating efficiency needed to launch new services, including planned routes to London, Beijing and Guangzhou.

The 737-8 forms a key part of Somon Air’s long-term fleet renewal program. Compared with previous-generation aircraft, the model delivers approximately 20% lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions while offering greater range and improved operating economics.

Somon Air Chief Executive Officer Abdulkosim Valiev said the aircraft’s performance and efficiency will enable the airline to open new routes and strengthen its network from Tajikistan’s central geographic location. He added that the carrier looks forward to further expanding its fleet with modern Boeing aircraft.

DAE Chief Executive Officer Firoz Tarapore said the delivery marks a milestone for both Somon Air and Tajikistan, noting that the lessor’s commitment includes a second 737-8 and reinforces its partnership with the airline. Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Eurasia, India and South Asia Paul Righi said the aircraft is well suited to Somon Air’s modernization plans and future international growth.

The delivery follows Somon Air’s 2025 commitment to acquire up to 14 Boeing 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner aircraft as it continues to expand its fleet and long-haul capabilities.
