Appointment of MASwings Managing Director

Subang (22 March 2011): Malaysia Airlines recently announced the appointment of Dato’ Captain Mohd Nawawi Haji Awang, as the new Managing Director for MASwings effective April 1, 2011. Taking over from Dato’ Mohd Salleh Ahmad Tabrani, Dato’ Captain Mohd Nawawi was the Executive Vice President, External Relations for Malaysia Airlines.

Dato’ Nawawi’s experience in leading Project PINTAR and Project ‘Sejahtera’, which are part of the airline’s corporate responsibility will be vital to MASwings’ business operations, as it is a community based airline that meets the needs of travelers throughout the heartland of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia. MASwings has chalked up an impressive resume of CSR projects such as environmental projects, books and stationeries donations to rural schools, fundraising dinner for Sarawak’s Children Cancer Society and organizing an educational familiarization trip to Kuala Lumpur for the high achieving students from the interiors of Sabah and Sarawak.

In his portfolio as Executive Vice President, External Relations, Dato’ Nawawi has built strong relationships with key stakeholders. His former leadership position in the Flight Operations division puts Dato’ Nawawi in good stead to further strengthen Malaysia Airlines-MASwings relations with the many stakeholders in Sabah and Sarawak.

MASwings Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines was officially launched on 1 October 2007. MASwings’ vision is to be a five-star star value carrier that provides safe, reliable, sustainable and affordable services. It also endeavours to enhance social economic development and integration of the people in Sabah and Sarawak. With an employee strength of 1300, MASwings extensive network covers 16 destinations in Sarawak, 5 in Sabah and one in Federal Territory Labuan making up a total of 22 destinations. Presently, the airline operates 42 routes in East Malaysia and offers more than 943 flights per week carrying an average of 100,000 passengers per month.
