China Airlines Sells Four Boeing 747-400 Freighters to Cargolux for US$85 Million

China Airlines has agreed to sell four Boeing 747-400F freighter aircraft to Luxembourg-based cargo carrier Cargolux Airlines International in a transaction valued at approximately US$85 million.

The sale became effective on June 23, 2026, after receiving final approval from Cargolux’s board of directors. China Airlines’ board had previously authorized the transaction in November 2025, with both parties subsequently completing the agreement.

The Taiwanese carrier expects to record a gain of approximately US$39 million from the disposal. The aircraft sale forms part of China Airlines’ broader fleet modernization strategy, aimed at replacing aging aircraft and improving operational efficiency.

According to the company, the transaction was negotiated directly between the parties and priced based on prevailing market conditions. Cargolux is not a related party to China Airlines.

The disposal continues China Airlines’ transition toward a newer and more fuel-efficient cargo fleet as global freight operators increasingly retire older-generation freighters in favor of modern aircraft with lower operating costs and improved environmental performance.
