18 April 2011, Brussels – The European Low Fares Airline Association (ELFAA) welcomes a report published today by York Aviation which shows that low fares airlines have become the carriers of choice for intra-Europe point-to- point air passengers.
“Today’s report proves that low fares airlines represent the future for air travel in Europe” said ELFAA Secretary General John Hanlon.
“Whilst other airlines continue to beg for government handouts in order to remain solvent, low fares airlines are bucking the trend by carrying more passengers than ever before and to an ever-increasing number of destinations throughout Europe.”
The report shows that, across the board, the share of passengers travelling with low fares airlines is set to increase up to the year 2020, rising from 38% to 53% for intra-European travel and from 43% to 60% for point-to-point.
“Whilst in the past air travel was the privilege of the elite few, in the last decade low fares airlines have helped make this form of mobility affordable for all, as borne out by the figures published today bear this out.”
The York Aviation report was commissioned by ELFAA in November 2010 and is available here http://www.elfaa.com/documents/LFAs_Market_Share_YorkAviation.pdf
