IPR Conversion Achieves Historic Milestone with EASA Approval of the First ATR 72-600 Large Cargo Door STC
Zug, 04 March 2026 – IPR Conversion proudly announces a landmark achievement: EASA has officially approved its Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the Large Cargo Door conversion of the ATR 72-600.
With this certification, ATR 72-600 MSN 1239, owned by ACIA Aero Leasing, becomes the first ATR 72-600 in the world to be converted from passenger to freighter configuration. This aircraft is not only a prototype — it represents the beginning of a new era for regional cargo aviation.
The aircraft was converted by Empire Aerospace in Idaho, a long-standing MRO partner of IPR Conversion with extensive experience on ATR aircraft.
IPR Conversion extends its sincere appreciation to ACIA Aero Leasing for its trust and partnership in bringing this pioneering program to life. This approval establishes IPR Conversion as the only company worldwide holding a certified passenger-to-freighter STC for the ATR 72-600.
Preserving What Makes the ATR 72-600 Exceptional
From day one, the objective was ambitious and clear: deliver a cargo conversion that fully preserves the technological edge of the ATR 72-600 — especially its modern glass cockpit.
Operators value the -600 for its advanced avionics, operational efficiency, and fleet commonality. Our engineering philosophy was simple: do not compromise what makes the aircraft superior.
This program was successfully developed in close collaboration with PMV Engineering and in strong coordination with ATR, the aircraft OEM. IPR Conversion warmly thanks both partners for their expertise, dedication, and commitment to excellence.
A Strategic Step Forward for the Market
The ATR 72-600 has been in continuous production since 2011. The earliest units are now reaching approximately 15 years of age — a natural inflection point for cargo conversion.
Importantly, the -600 remains in production today. ATR has already delivered more -600 aircraft than -500 models, dramatically expanding the future pool of convertible aircraft. This creates a significant long-term opportunity for operators seeking younger, more efficient freighters.
Moreover, the majority of airlines operating mixed passenger and cargo activities have already transitioned their passenger fleets to the -600 standard. With this new certified solution, operators can now harmonize and rationalize their fleets around a single aircraft type — reducing training complexity, optimizing maintenance, and improving operational efficiency.
Looking Ahead
FAA validation is already underway, marking the next step in expanding global market access.
This milestone represents far more than a certification. It positions IPR Conversion at the forefront of next- generation regional freighter solutions — enabling operators to transition toward younger aircraft, protect asset value, and prepare for the future of regional cargo logistics.
The converted freighter ATR 72-600 cargo era has officially begun.
