United Takes First A321XLR Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF Advantage

United Airlines has taken delivery of the first aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney’s GTF Advantage engine, an Airbus A321XLR that introduces the latest PW1100G-JM standard into commercial service.

The GTF Advantage is designed to provide up to twice the time on wing of the current GTF configuration while offering 4% to 8% more takeoff thrust. The additional thrust capability is intended to support higher-payload and longer-range operations, including missions flown by the A321XLR.

United will be the first airline to operate the new engine standard. The carrier already operates GTF-powered aircraft, with the Advantage configuration designed to be interchangeable and intermixable with the existing PW1100G-JM.

Pratt & Whitney plans to transition its entire PW1100G-JM production line to the GTF Advantage specification by 2028.

The manufacturer is also extending much of the new standard’s durability improvements to existing engines through its GTF Hot Section Plus upgrade. Pratt & Whitney expects the modification to provide 90% to 95% of the Advantage configuration’s durability benefits and plans to make it available for incorporation during maintenance visits beginning in early 2027.
