Japan Airlines (JAL) has placed an order for 16 Embraer E190-E2 aircraft, with options for another 10, as part of a fleet renewal program for its regional subsidiary J-AIR. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2029.
The E190-E2s will replace J-AIR’s existing Embraer E170 and E190 aircraft, which operate domestic services primarily from Osaka Itami Airport. The new aircraft will support JAL’s efforts to maintain regional connectivity while improving operating efficiency.
The fleet investment forms part of the JAL Group Management Vision 2035, which addresses structural challenges in Japan’s domestic aviation market, including declining business travel demand, demographic changes and rising operating costs.
Powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1900G geared turbofan engines, the E190-E2 offers improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions and reduced noise compared with earlier-generation E-Jets. The aircraft has a standard seating capacity of 97 to 114 passengers and a range of approximately 2,950 nautical miles.
JAL expects the aircraft to reduce maintenance and operating costs while providing capacity suited to regional routes with varying passenger demand.
The airline did not disclose the financial terms of the order or the planned delivery schedule beyond the initial 2029 timeframe.
